Masaomi Raku

Japanese, born in 1983 in Kyoto
Lives and works in Japan

Masaomi Raku graduated from the Graduate School of Art and Design at Tokyo University of the Arts in 2008. His work revolves around stone carving, where he strives to avoid dominating nature through artificial means. Instead, he seeks to harmoniously coexist with nature and form, translating this philosophy in his art. His personal motto is 'expression within stone, and nature alongside expression'

Raku’s sculptures do not impose artificial qualities onto the stone. The process of creating his work involves an understanding and respect for the material’s inherent properties. Each piece of stone guides its transformation, allowing the artist’s hand to collaborate with the material rather than dominate it. His works reflect a balance between the forces of nature and human expression, creating a dialogue between the two.

Notable solo exhibitions include ‘Sculptor Masaomi Raku Exhibition’ at the Kyoto Eki Art Museum and the Ishikawa Prefectural Art Museum in 2017, ‘Masaomi Raku Solo Exhibition’ at Kamo-Wakeikazuchi Shrine in 2015, ‘Stone Tools: From Stone to Utensils’ in 2023, and 'Light Vessel' at ZENBI (Kagizen Art Museum) in 2024.
