After completing a Bachelor of Fine Arts in California, Tony Marsh undertook a three year apprenticeship in the Shimaoka Pottery Centre in Japan. Imbued by the culture, the spirituality and the humility of Japanese pottery, his ceramics function like variations on the notions of presence and void, vessel and content, restraint and exuberance.

Marsh likes to challenge and question. In his making process, he implements non-conventional tools and manufacturing protocols, resulting in textures and shapes that both pay tribute to and go beyond traditional techniques.

In 2018, Marsh was awarded a United States Artists Fellow.
Marsh?s work is included in several private and permanent museum collections, including  the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; Museum of Art and Design, New York; LACMA, Los Angeles; Oakland Museum of Art; Gardiner Museum of Art, Toronto; and Museum of Fine Arts, Houston.
