Ritsue Mishima was born in Kyoto, Japan in 1962. From 1982 she worked as a stylist for advertising firms; in 1985 began creating art installations with flowers. In 1989 she moved to Venice, where she lives and works dedicating herself since 1996 to the creation of glass objects in a Murano furnace, where she collaborates with the master glass blower Andrea Zilio, while the coldwork is carried out by Giacomo Barbini.

Ritsue is inspired by natural forms and reflections of light, which she expresses through the medium of glass. Her glass is transparent and colourless and gives the sensation of pureness and luminosity. It captures and releases light and its surrounding colours, creating perfect harmony with its context.

Artist's faraway origins and a thousand years long Venetian tradition are melted in her glass and expressed in contemporary language.

She has exhibited her works in Milan, London, Rotterdam, Tokyo, Brussels and San Francisco. The artist's work is hosted in the Musée des Arts décoratifs in Paris; Rotterdam Boijmans Van Beuningen collection; in the Coesfeld Alter Hof Herding collection; in the Frans Hals Museum and in the Museum Jan van der Togt in Amstelveen in Holland.

In 2001 she won the Giorgio Armani award at the Contemporary Decorative Arts exhibition, Sotheby's, London.

"My glass is transparent and colourless.

It captures and releases light and its surrounding colours.

From somewhere, the memory of a line overlaps with the line of nature:

by chance, or inevitably, the idea of a form emerges.

The glass is illuminated by the rays of the sun, the reflections of water

and the feelings of those who view them.

And for a while everything melts."
