Masaomi Raku

28 March - 19 April 2025

Pierre Marie Giraud is pleased to present a solo exhibition of works by Japanese sculptor Masaomi Raku. The exhibition will take place from Friday, March 28th to Saturday, April 19th, 2025, at the gallery located in Brussels. This event will showcase recent works of Masaomi Raku, known for his stone carvings that emphasize the relationship between nature and form.

Masaomi Raku was born in Kyoto, Japan, in 1983. He graduated with a Master’s degree in Sculpture from the Graduate School of Tokyo Zokei University in 2008. His work focuses on stone carving, with a central philosophy of avoiding domination over nature. Instead, Raku seeks to maintain a harmonious relationship between his art and the material he works with.

Raku’s sculptures do not impose artificial qualities onto the stone. Instead, the process of creating his work involves an understanding and respect for the material’s inherent properties. Each piece of stone guides its transformation, allowing the artist’s hand to collaborate with the material rather than dominate it. His works reflect a balance between the forces of nature and human expression, creating a dialogue between the two.

This exhibition will present a selection of Raku’s recent works, continuing his exploration of stone as a medium. The sculptures featured will demonstrate his ongoing interest in how light, texture, and form can interact with the material to express concepts of permanence and change. The works in this exhibition will reflect Raku’s approach of carving stone while allowing its natural features to remain an integral part of the finished piece.
