Citrouille

19 November - 10 December 2022

The legendary French interior designer, Jacques Grange, hosted his first exhibition at the gallery in 2022, showcasing multiple executions of his well-known Citrouille, an elegant leather ottoman in the form of a pumpkin.

It is safe to say that Jacques Grange is one of the most respected and influential voices in contemporary interior design. Ever since the 1970s, he went on to build an impeccable reputation in France and far beyond. Creating the private residences of Yves Saint-Laurent and Pierre Bergé in Paris, Marrakech and Deauville, Grange soon became a major name in the domain. Pierre Bergé would look back on their many collaborations with great admiration, stating that Jacques Grange « developed a very own syntax and vocabulary with which he wrote his own story » and also that he was « a friend who understood him and with whom he shared the same intelligence and taste. »

The inspiration for the Citrouille dates back to the début of Grange's illustrious career in the 1970s. During that time, he conceived the idea of making an ottoman in the shape of a pumpkin ? as a tribute to his childhood years spent in the French Lot Department. As a child, Grange recalls playing childhood games with pumpkins together with his cousins. They found it amusing to play with them and smash them. « A game that turned out to lay the foundations for a good idea » Grange reminisces.

The concept resulted in the creation of an exquisite object. Coming in different colours, each Citrouille appears in a limited edition. The colour palette ranges from a soft and warm yellow, to a refined shade of khaki, to a ? closer to the original colour of a pumpkin ? vibrant yet gentle tone of orange. Each example has a discrete handle on top, is impeccably finished and is crafted out of the finest calfskin leather.
